The Marat Karpeka Lemur Foundation exists because more than 90% of lemur species are now facing extinction, making them the most threatened group of mammals on earth. MKLF hopes to lead the effort to save these remarkable creatures. We are committed to education and the conservation of lemurs and their habitats.
Our Philosophy
We believe people should not have the right to encroach on the habitats of animals to the point of extinction. We oppose all forms of animal abuse and neglect. We believe in the need to educate our communities, equipping with tools to achieve a more balanced ecology. We believe the mitigation of threats against lemurs must be achieved through local networking, direct services, and societal action.
Everyone should be accountable to the world around them. We believe all creatures, great and small, are deserving of respect, protection, and care. We believe in ethical practices, the spirit of cooperation, and open communication. We believe businesses or individuals harming animals and their habitats should be held accountable. We encourage the participation of all persons or groups committed to ending the struggle for lemurs.
Core Values
Integrity – honorable initiatives and honest practices
Community – collaborating with communities to accomplish more
Good Stewardship – keeping our organization small, relying on volunteers, and allocating as much funds as possible directly to saving lemurs
Our Story
Essential to our organization are Marat Karpeka and Dr. Russell Mittermeier. Having a passion for lemurs, and wanting to do more, he founded the Marat Karpeka Lemur Foundation.
